NEDDC Local Plan Issues and Options Consultation on the Strategic Approach to the Location of Development and Refined Sites (March 2026)
Wingerworth

Respondent: District Councillor for Wingerworth
Wingerworth is a Level 2 settlement. A larger village, not a main town. The amount of development pressure directed at Wingerworth collectively across these sites is substantial and, given previous development here, a cumulative impact assessment must be done to demonstrate how any further homes could be supported. How is the village's character being preserved? Where is the additional infrastructure? No new schools, one GP surgery, country lanes and unreliable public transport, yet more homes? The green space buffer between Wingerworth and Chesterfield is disappearing. Any development must prioritise genuinely affordable housing as young people are being forced out.

Entirely unsuitable. No decent highways access and increased pressure on New Roiad which has issues from Deer Park school parking. Agricultural land should not be a priority for building and development poses enormous risk to the ecological treausre of Tricketts Brook. Sloped landscape raises flooding concerns. Further building out of village in to limited green space.
In addition, the proximity to Wingerworth Lido which has had huge debate around wildlife and biodiversity loss recently concerns me greatly. We cannot afford to yet further damage local flora and fauna.

Entirely unsuitable. No suitable highways access and adds yet more pressure to New Road which already suffers from school traffic from Deer Park. Hillside homes would create huge flood risk. Agricultural land should not be a priority for building. Risk to public footpath which provides access to nature and Tricketts Brook - helping physical and mental health of residents. Even if footpath was not lost - as so many are - the beauty surrounding it would be gone. This, alongside proximity to Grade II listed buildings is all reason enough to not develop this site.

Entirely unsuitable. No suitable highways access and adds yet more pressure to New Road which already suffers from school traffic from Deer Park. Potential flood risk here. Village again encroaching onto increasingly limited green spaces.

Unsuitable. No suitable highways access and initial plans suggested that a bridge would be required to support entry to the site. This poses huge bottlenecking concerns and lack of access for emergency services. This site already suffers from heavy traffic and would only suiffer more with 180 homes. There is also a huge flood risk posed for the recently developed homes off Spindle Drive. Ecology would be impacted and hundreds of homeowners would lose neighbouring green spaces and views.

This brownfield site should be a priority as there is opportunity to build a community here. In order to achieve this residents need local shops, better bus routes, GP surgery and a school at least. This will ease pressure on limited services within Wingerworth and build a further sense of identity for this development. We all know that Derby Road/A61 is choked with traffic at the best of times, all the more reason for better local services which people can access on foot or by bike, and support public transport to get residents to Chesterfield without use of a car.

This is stretching 'The Avenue' to areas which are not part of the site whilst risking flooding and impacting the environment by removing hedgerows. The site is better suited for 'employment development' rather than homes as stated but I fear that means an industrial site rather than local jobs for local people who really need some local facilities nearby such as independent community shops.

Again, liberal use of the phrase 'The Avenue'. Concerns around flooding and ecology must be addressed. Appears to be an attempt to place large industrial units here rather than homes or community facilities which is alarming given the cost of living and affordable housing crisis.

Concerns around ecological impact - vgiven the unique status of The Avenue homes here should be built to the highest possible sustainability standards to integrate with the nature which surrounds them. Derby Road/A61 is choked with traffic at the best of times, all the more reason for better local services which people can access on foot or by bike, and support public transport to get residents to Chesterfield without use of a car. Nervous about whether 'employment oppoirtunities' mean more mega corporations warehouse rather than the local services, shops, schools and health facilities needed by local people.
